STAND

Oh weary soul, with such travail,
Why dost thou weep and mourn and wail?

Though ye feel forsaken, lost,
O’er life’s billows thou art tossed.

Christ awaits thine wretched soul’s prayer,
Humbly ye return from the Dragon’s lair.

Asking in faith, with one accord,
Freely blessed are ye by the Lord.

Thou art supplied with longed for peace,
Confusion and discord swiftly cease.

Comfort, wisdom, strength, each need,
Aiding ye who follow His lead.

Stand thee steadfast, firm and strong,
Through thine painful trials long.

For when thine earthly life is gone
His gilded voice shall say “Well done.”

As we dawn on the Christmas (yes I did just say the C word) season we hear many complaints. We hear complaints from the Freedom From Religion Foundation about how Christians are shoving religion down people’s throats with wishes of Merry Christmas. On the other end of the spectrum, we hear complaints from many Christians about the ferocity of the FFRF’s attacks on Christianity, especially during the Christmas season. Next from the financial world, we hear about the placement of the economy. Then the political world comes in and mixes all the complaints together. I am here to tell you that if we truly wanted peace in this season of peace, we would respect each other and grow up.
I know that I am guilty of all these complaints, but that does not excuse me or anyone else. I am not saying, “Go against your beliefs,” I am saying respect each others beliefs and wait for this season of joy to be over to pick your fight back up. Can we not lay off for a little while? For real! If we take some time off we may be able to regain our minds and argue like civilized people. Can we at least do that? We are at the top of the food chain, lets act like it and wish each other a Merry Christmas, or whatever you celebrate, and not be offended.

With gasoline remaining near $4 a gallon, many people are looking to save more money than usual. Some people are starting to cut back on luxuries, and others are investing in more efficient tools. Recently, the all-in-one product market has boomed in America, but for some reason the American economy continues to decline. One of the biggest all-in-one products that has become popular in mainstream America is the fuel-efficient car. Most people buy a fuel-efficient car because it saves them money immediately; but the question remains, “Is it really more economical to buy a hybrid car like the Toyota Prius than to buy a small, gas-only car like the Ford Fiesta?” Approximately the same price, the Prius and Fiesta are both relatively affordable, but there are several factors that set them apart which help a customer decide in the purchasing process. When buying certain vehicles like the Prius and Fiesta, customers need to look at each car’s comfort, fuel efficiency, overall customer satisfaction, and basic economic repercussions before making a final decision.
One of the most important elements of buying a car is comparing the comfort of the seats and legroom of each car to the other. Many modern cars like the Prius have a bucket-style seat which many customers find uncomfortable during long trips. The legroom, though, makes up for this deficiency in comfort with 55.9 inches of legroom that gives comfort to the longer-legged drivers. On the other hand, the Fiesta – with the same general seat style – excels in the seating area. The only major complaints about the seating in the Fiesta are the lack of an armrest and the legroom, which is only 52.7 inches and not meant for the taller customer. The Fiesta’s legroom deficiency is often the ending point for some customers, but the average customer usually needs to do some more comparing before the shopping has ended.
Buying either a Prius or Fiesta also requires comparing the fuel efficiencies of both cars. Many customers, if their main concern is fuel efficiency, will buy the Prius because of the 48 miles-per-gallon rating and how it will save them money at the gas pump. Ironically, the Fiesta which is only rated at 37 miles-per-gallon, is among the highest selling fuel-efficient cars; giving weight to the fact that, for many customers, fuel efficiency is not the most important feature in a car.
In light of the fact that gas mileage is not always the most important factor of buying a car, comparing the overall satisfaction of current customers becomes a necessary and imperative part of buying any car. This comparison goes beyond just comfort; comparing goes on to performance, visual capabilities (mirrors, blind spots, vision through both the front and rear windshields, etc.), and, of course, the cars’ looks. The way one compares two cars like the Prius and Fiesta is by going to websites like kbb.com (Kelley Blue Book) and reading customer reviews. Consumers must carefullly choose which reviews he or she will read because many reviews give a nonobjective viewpoint that often misleads customers. On the other hand, customers often find many good reviews, if they know how to look. One should look for a review on the Prius that gives the pros about the Prius (the gas mileage) and the cons (the seating), and he or she should do the same for the Prius. Finding good reviews can sometimes be difficult, but when one does find good reviews on both cars, he or she will end up having to make a difficult decision, and, unfortunately, many customers will often overlook the final factor of wisely buying a vehicle.
In the end, the most important item to look at when buying either the Prius or Fiesta is the economic effects that buying either car will produce. In the current American economy, many consumers are trying to buy items that will support the American economy and keep the profit from those products in the United States. Unfortunately, many people will often overlook this principle just to get good gas mileage, making the Prius a perfect example of this mistake. When a customer buys a Prius, made by the Japanese car manufacturer Toyota, the profit goes overseas to the Japanese economy instead of staying in the American economy. On the other hand, buying the Fiesta, made by the American outfit Ford, ensures that the profit from this vehicle stays in America, helping the American economy. If the American car manufacturing industry is not supported, the price on foreign cars will increase because the foreign manufacturers will know that any car sold in America is coming from foreign plants. If imported vehicles are all that Americans will be able to buy, then foreign manufacturers will be able to ask any price for cars, and they will be able to receive that price for their cars.
So, looking at the economic effects, overall customer satisfaction, fuel efficiencies, and comfort of the Prius and Fiesta will help a customer decide which car to buy. Many will look at the easily thought of questions about comfort, fuel efficiency, and current customer satisfaction; but few look at what effect this decision will have on the economic future. Many times these all-in-one products like the Toyota Prius are exactly what customers are looking for; but in the long run, do these all-in-one products really help consumers economically?

HUEN 121
Illustration Essay Rough Draft
We Have Failed
“Can I help you?” is a common phrase we unfortunately hear less each year. We may hear it from our fellow shopper or from the persistent salesperson; nevertheless, this politeness is falling from our vocabulary. We can see in today’s shopping world that many times customers receive inadequate customer service as a result of poor salesmanship. Poor salesmanship and salespeople not caring that they are falling short of the expectations of customers and employers are the main results of being caught up in this modern world of technology and instant gratification.
In a world of instantaneous indulgence, salespeople lose focus on what is important to the customer. I have learned from my experience as a part-time manager in hardware sales that many of the younger salespeople dislike helping customers who need personal help or advice about certain products. One of my coworkers, “Max”, is a perfect example of this attitude. Raised with a shopping experience of shopping online, or at stores that focused on self-service; an attitude of: only idiots need good customer service, formed in Max. Almost every shift he would complain about customers that “still shop the old-fashioned way.” Focusing on the fact that people do not utilize the easy access of the internet and ship-to-home services which online stores like eBay, Amazon, Walmart.com offer, his favorite complaint was that these “idiots” did not shop on the internet. From my experience with Max I have found that many salespeople, including myself, shop at non-specialized stores that focus on making it easy for us to shop on our own. When we are shopping on our own and tending to ourselves, many times we as salespeople forget what it means to stay focused on what the customer needs.
Another one of the core reasons for poor salesmanship is failures in training. One of the managers, “Gertrude”, which trained me was notorious for poorly training new employees. One time after I had worked there for a while, I heard Gertrude telling a new salesperson about a product, and all I can remember is thinking, “Yeah! Back in the 80’s!” This was not the first time or last that I had this form of reaction to her training, and I was not the only one. It came to the point where none of the sales reps paid attention to her training. These kinds of failures in training cause the poor salesmanship that is beginning to dominate retail today. A result of this is the growth of encounters with inefficient salespeople, which causes great discouragement to all that care about sales. This often results in complacency and little motivation for salespeople in their lives in the workplace.
Complacency and a lack of motivation are the two main factors contributing to poor salesmanship today. Max’s constant mood of complacency regularly affected his work ethic. Not a day went by that I did not receive a complaint about his work. There was one time that Max made a duplicate of a key, and (like with many of his duplicate keys) the customer brought it back because it did not work. This customer had tried several times to get his original key duplicated, and was each time told that each new duplicate would work, and it did not. Later that day I brought this situation up with both my managers and Max, and once again we received the typical Max response, “Oh, OK.” Max was the living breathing epitome of complacency and detachment in a salesperson. But this was not all his fault. There was little incentive for him to do a good job. Small-town, mom-and-pop stores find it difficult to acquire quality employees for small-town wages. Max was willing to work for these wages because he knew that few others would, and this guaranteed him a job. In other stores too there are insufficient incentives, which often cause the opposite effects of incentives on employees. If an employee does not care about his or her performance, then he or she is unfit for retail.
In a high-speed electronics world of instant communication and satisfaction, salespeople find it hard to focus on a slower paced shopper. Politeness is fading to the background and we fail to see this happening. Even outside of the shopping arena we fail to heed Peter’s admonition in I Peter 3.8, “…be courteous:”, only proving our sin nature.

“Can I help you?” a phrase we hear less each year. There are many forms and associations with this phrase. It may be from our fellow shopper or the beckoning call of a salesperson; nevertheless, this politeness is falling from our vocabulary. Many times we as customers receive little to no good customer service in today’s shopping environment. From all of this we can see one major consequence our sin nature. When caught up in the modern world of technology and instant gratification, salespeople tend to fall short of the expectations of many customers and employers, and fail to realize it.

This modern world is composed of several attitudes, one of which being instant gratification. In a world instantaneous indulgence, salespeople lose focus on what is important to the customer. I have learned from my experience as a part-time manager in sales that many of the younger salespeople dislike having to help customers that need large amounts of personal help or advice about certain products. One of the worst salespeople I have ever worked with, “Max”, is a perfect example of this attitude. Max was raised to shop online, or at stores that focused on self-service; breeding within him an attitude that only idiots needs good customer service, and he did not keep this opinion to himself. Almost every shift he would complain about customers that “still shop the old-fashioned way.” His most indulged in complaint was that these “idiots” did not shop on the internet. The majority of his complaint was that people do not utilize the services of mobile web, Wi-Fi® and ship-to-home services that online stores like eBay®, Amazon®, Walmart.com® offer. His problem was assuming that everyone was just like him, lazy; his understanding of retail is limited to X-Box Live® and his smart phone. I have found from my experience with Max, that many salespeople, including myself, were raised to shop at non-specialized like Wal-Mart®, Sam’s Club®, and Menard’s®. These variety stores are notorious for poor customer service, and at the same time for making it easy for you us shop on our own. When we are shopping on our own and having to tend to ourselves, many times all of us as salespeople forget what it means to stay focused on what the customer needs.

Another one of the core problems is failures in training. One of the managers that trained me was notorious for doing a poor job training new employees. Not a day would go by that either I or some other salesperson would catch her applying outdated product knowledge. One time I heard her telling a new salesperson about a product, and all I can remember is thinking, “Yeah! Back in the 80’s!” This was not the first time or last that I had this form of reaction; it was a constant struggle in our store. It came to the point where we no longer paid attention to her training, and replaced her training with online and on-the-job training. This manager is the embodiment of poor salesmanship and management. She had no values in sales and training, making our store the personification of failures in training. Failures in training result in an almost predictable, exponential growth of poor salesmanship that is beginning to dominate the world of retail today; resulting in the growth of encounters with inefficient salespeople. Unfortunately, more and more employers receive complaints from customers about salespeople in the larger retail establishments, causing discouragement to not only me, but also to employers and salespeople across the country alike. This often results in complacency and little motivation for salespeople in their lives in the workplace.

Complacency and a lack of motivation, I believe, are the two main factors contributing to poor salesmanship today. Whether it is a manager who at first does not fire a poor salesperson, or a supervisor that does not care about the performance of a sales representative, or a salesperson that fails care about sales; complacency takes a toll on all of us. Max was constantly in a mood of complacency. Not a day went by that I did not receive a complaint about his work. There was one time that Max made a duplicate of a key, and like with many of his duplicate keys, the customer brought it back because it did not work. Though this kind of event was not unusual, the customer’s reaction was. This customer, an elderly man, had tried several times to get his original key duplicated, and each time he was told that each new duplicate would work. Understandably, the customer was livid. Later that day I brought this situation up with both my managers and Max, and once again we received the typical Max response, “Oh, OK.” Max was the living breathing epitome of complacency and disconnectedness in a salesperson. Max was the kind of salesperson that never paid attention in training, or he had a look on his face that told you that what you were saying was not retained in his mind. But all this was not his fault. There was little incentive for him to do a good job. In a small town, mom-and-pop hardware store, it is difficult to find someone who will work for small town wages. Max was willing to do this because it guaranteed him a job. But in other stores there too can be little incentive, no incentive, or “so-called” incentives that have the opposite effect on employees. Sometimes this can be exactly what the salesperson wants, but if it is then he or she is like Max and is not currently fit for the world of retail sales.

HUEN 121
Ill. Essay outline

Thesis: When caught up in the modern world, salespeople tend to fall short of the expectations of many customers and employers, and fail to realize it.

Introduction
I. In a world instantaneous indulgence salespeople lose focus on what is important to the customer.
A. Online shopping plays an important role in shopping these days.
i. Websites like eBay, Amazon, and Craigslist have become commonplace shopping centers like malls.
ii. Ship-to-home and overnight shipping has taken the role of convenience in the shopping world.
B. Ease-of-access is the backbone of shopping.
i. Credit cards have become useable over the internet.
ii. Mobile web (e.g. 3G, 4G, and Mobile Wi-Fi) has permeated society allowing us to shop wherever, whenever.
C. A “Drive Through” mentality fuels this movement of instantaneous gratification.
i. Texting and similar practices helps maintain this mentality.
ii. Self-service has become the norm in modern, non-specialized stores like Wal-Mart, Sam’s Club, and Menard’s.
II. Failures in training have caused many employees to fail as salespeople.
A. Poor resources have contributed to this poor training.
i. The core values of being a salesperson have not been drilled into the trainee.
ii. A poor salesperson did the training.
B. A degeneration of salesmanship can be found in modern shopping centers.
i. A place that was once known for good customer service now has a bad record with customers.
ii. One poor salesman trains another; producing an almost predictable, exponential growth of poor salesmanship.
C. A poor image of salespeople causes some salespeople to not try hard enough to please a customer or boss.
i. Bad experiences with poor salespeople have caused many shoppers to have a poor outlook on all salespeople.
ii. Many times it is just because there is a lack of desire to please on the part of the salesperson.
iii. Complacency plays a large role in these salespersons’ lives.
III. A lack of motivation is the main reason for the majority of poor salesmanship.
A. One of the components this is that there is no self-motivation.
i. There is a no desire to excel.
ii. There is no desire to train or be trained.
iii. There is no challenge in the selling world.
a) A lack of competition drives this force.
b) Poor competition practices also energize the lack of challenge.
iv. A failure to challenge oneself (i.e. integrity, initiative) produces no motivation.
a) This can be due to a non-competitive nature.
b) There is no desire to “sell, sell, sell.”
B. There is little or no reward for doing a good job selling.
i. Some stores have no incentives to offer a salesperson.
ii. Some stores have non-appealing incentives.
iii. There is an unreachable incentive placed that offers no desire to achieve.
Conclusion

The ultimate question: what do you believe? Today I talked to a man who could not clearly answer that question; this was not the first time I have run into this dilemma. Whenever somebody tells me “I believe what I believe, and you believe what you belive”, and whenever I ask them what specifically they believe I can never get an answer. It is always the same routine and they say the same thing over and over again. Then I tell them that they must have a good foundation for what they believe, and ask them what it is, again the I-believe-what-I-believe-routine. there is no foundation to their life. It is pointless. Only God can make a firm foundation for belief, and He has: Jesus. Jesus is THE Way THE Truth and THE Life, and no man comes to THE Father but by Him. Jesus is the same yesterday, today, and forever, now that makes the best foundation, one that never changes form. You cannot work your way to Heaven because all have fallen short of the glory of God, and the wages of sin is death, but the Gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord. It is a gift, it can never be earned. Just remember that when it is given unto man once to die and after this the judgement. And when you get there, it is too late. So be ready for it. Procrastination never works unless you are going to do it tomorrow. Jesus is not shy about His Second Coming so don’t you be.

Work and graduation tend to take up many seniors’ time; I know they have mine. This tends to take them away from their families, and many times limits their time in God’s Word. This can be dangerous to their spiritual growth, especially if they plan to go into the ministry. So this is just a post to the parents, and teenagers might learn from this too so pay attention.

Many seniors will get a summer job, or just get more hours at their current one; this takes time away from their schedule of fun, or from family time. Personally, I work 40 hours a week, and have through the last half of my senior year. I know how much effort is put into working a busy schedule, and maintaining family, personal, and spiritual relationships. It can be difficult for a social teen to have to sacrifice some of these fun times, and what they really need is for you to step in and get involved, because most times they do not have the energy for it. Get involved with your senior, he is probably only waiting for you to find something he likes and enjoy it too. Next, encourage him in his walk with God. Start reading your Bible on the same schedule as he is, and discuss with him what God in doing in both your lives. Or better yet, even get involved in his devotions. Spend personal time with him. Set times aside that fit his schedule, and do something fun together or with his friends. In the end it all boils down to being involved with your senior on any possible level. In the end they will greatly appreciate it.

Now to the seniors. Allow your parents to get involved in your life. More that likely they are just doing what is best for you, and are concerned for what you are going to be in college. Open up, or they will feel like they have failed. Relationships are always two-sided. There has never been a one-sided relationship that succeeded, because there is no real relationship. Yes, I know your parents are out of date and expired, it is up to you to bring them up to date. So get involved with them.

So to everyone out there that is a senior or has a senior, get involved in life; life depends on it.

These past few years have been a slough of natural disasters, and many have asked the question, “Where was God in all this?” The answer, I have it. God was where He has always been: Everywhere. “Well, why didn’t He stop this then? Isn’t He all-powerful?” Again, I have the answer. Have you learned to trust Him yet? No? Then just get ready for more trials and more blessings. Yes? Then why aren’t you? Try to learn something either spiritual or physical about this. God either plans or permits everything that has ever happened to us. There is a plan for it. 2Co_12:9 And he said unto me, My grace is sufficient for thee: for my strength is made perfect in weakness. Most gladly therefore will I rather glory in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me. Only when you cannot not operate on your own does God operate fully in your life. Many people in Joplin, MO. are either becoming mad at God, or are falling into His Arms. People have had their homes destroyed and family members taken from this life. They look to God and say, “What have I done to deserve this?” For Christians, you were faithful. Have you ever heard of a man named Job? Have you ever heard Satan called the Prince of the Power of the Air (Ephesians2.2). Job was righteous man who suffered more in a short period of time than all the people in Joplin combined suffered. In one day, he lost everything he owned, his family, his friends, his health, the devotion of his wife, everything but his life; all because Satan gave a report to God that he had nothing to do (interesting fact, the Devil reports his activities to God, like a paroled convict would to his parole officer; thus Satan is on parole), and GOD told him to go after Job. This story only proves that God either plans or permits everything that happens. In the end God restored every thing back to Job, and then some. God wants to bless you, you just have to let Him. Remember God works in mysterious ways. Natural disasters are not so unnatural.
